The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh will soon launch trials for Plasma therapy for curing will test it in the COVID-19 patients.

Dr Jagat Ram, Director, PGIMER, told India Today TV on Thursday that the institute will collaborate with another Covid-19 centre to launch the plasma therapy trials soon.

"We have discussed this issue and they are collaborating with some other centre for research and a trial will be done," he said and explained how anti-bodies from a cured patient are drawn and injected to a new patient which can control the virus in the absence of a vaccine.

Ram said that plasma therapy holds promise as it was used during the SARS and MERS epidemic too and the results were favourable.

With regards to the results of hydroxychloroquine use in Covid-19 cases, Ram said currently this drug was being administered to the Covid-19 patients who have mild to moderate symptoms.

The doses are also suggested to the frontline medical health workers including doctors, but only after obtaining their consent.

"Hydroxychloroquine is being administered to the mild to moderate cases of COVID-19 besides the frontline health workers in PGI Chandigarh. This medicine helps decrease the pulmonary spread of pneumonitis. Favourable results have already been found in some COVID-19 cases," the doctor said.

Ram said obtaining consent from the patient is mandatory before putting them on the hydroxychloroquine as it has side effects like cardiac rhythm, muscular, neurological or renal side effects.

"Majority of patients are opting for this medicine as no vaccine is available. We also get consent from our doctors and other staff working in the isolated wards to put them on this medicine," he added.
